The Lake Behind the Magnet

Where the vibration motor in your pocket actually comes from.

The phone buzzes once, face-down on the table. Inside the case, a coin-sized motor spins an off-centre weight against a neodymium-iron-boron magnet. Trace the magnet backward and the trail stops being metaphorical almost immediately.

China accounts for roughly 70% of global rare-earth mining, which is the number everyone quotes and the least decisive one. The number that matters is downstream: 85–90% of global processing capacity, and for the heavier rare earths, 98–99% of separation capacity. The chokepoint isn't the hole in the ground. It's the refinery.

A large share of that ore comes from around Bayan Obo, in Inner Mongolia — the largest known rare-earth deposit on the planet — and gets refined nearby at Baotou. Since 1965, Baotou Steel's refineries have pumped their tailings into a purpose-built dam outside the city: a circular embankment now 11.5 kilometres around, engineered to eventually hold close to 234 million cubic metres of black slurry. People who've filmed it call it a lake. Chinese authorities confirmed in 2016 that farmland around it had been contaminated, and researchers have documented crop losses and health complaints in the villages nearby for years before that.

Draw the boundary correctly and that lake is the actual size of a vibration motor. Nobody signed a permit that read "flood this floodplain so a phone can buzz quietly in a pocket on the other side of the planet." The technosphere doesn't move through permits like that. It moves through several billion small, unrelated purchases, and the backward trace is never the one anybody is asked to make at the register.
